Terms of Service

Content
  • Scientific illustration: I am happy to draw any species as long as sufficient visual references or specimens are made available. I am happy to draw from life if a specimen is shipped to me and the client covers the resulting shipping (and return) cost.
  • Character and scenery art: Dark or adult themes are typically acceptable. Likewise, I am almost always happy to draw any character type unless I specify otherwise in set pose commissions (YCHs) for instance. Complex designs, environments, or architecture are also acceptable, but will result in higher price.
  • I reserve the right to refuse any subject.

Process
  • Beginning: The client contacts me with their idea to receive a quote. After we decide on a price, given I am open for the type of commission requested, I will send the client their paypal invoice.
  • Sketch (this stage is skipped in set pose YCH commissions): I will then roughly sketch the piece out for the client to appraise and make major compositional changes if necessary.
  • Updates (if applicable): Then, depending on the complexity of the work, the client may be contacted with further updates where they may request up to 3 rounds of minor revisions. If the client requests more than 3 rounds of revisions, or wishes to change the fundamental layout of the piece after all, this can be done for an additional fee. If this is the case, the expense will be decided together.
  • Completion: The client is sent the final piece when it is finished, and payment is due within 1 day after completion. With simpler works such as sketches, the client receives the finished work immediately, and can then request moderate changes.

Payment
  • Invoice: Payment takes place via PayPal invoice. The client may pay at any time during the working process, however, payment must arrive within 1 day after completion. Payment plans can be discussed for artwork worth over 200€. For digital artwork, invoices include digital goods only. The client won't receive a physical copy of the work unless they have requested a print and the price has been adjusted accordingly.
  • Refunds: If the client backs down from a commission which is already underway, or is unsatisfied with the work despite extensive editing, they are entitled to a refund, the maximum of which is 50% of the price agreed upon (including any extra edit fees). Depending on how much work has gone into the work already, the amount I am able to refund may be less. If I am forced to call off a commission that is already underway for any reason, regardless of how much work has already gone into it, the commissioner receives a 100% refund.
  • Commercial use: For work intended for commercial use (books, company advertisements, merchandise etc), additional conditions in terms of rights and pricing will be agreed upon on a case to case basis. For example, if the client wishes for me to relinquish my copyright permanently, the price will be multiplied by a factor of between 7 and 10. Depending on duration, this may be less. For the printing of my work in books or zines, I may request a fraction of gross sales (typically around 3 to 5%). These cases are complex and I urge clients to discuss these details with me. If a work has already been completed and commercial use is desired after all, this can almost certainly be arranged retrospectively.

Rights
The client may: (unless commercial use of the work has been discussed and other terms have been agreed upon)
  • Crop work in order to use it as an icon etc, as long as credit in the form of a link back to my website or social media is given to me in the profile or a similar location near where the cropped version is used.
  • Upload work to online galleries, social media etc. as long as I am credited for the art with a link back to my website or social media.
  • Print work for personal use only (posters, badges, photo-books etc.)

The artist may: (unless commercial use of the work has been discussed and other terms have been agreed upon)
  • Display work in online and real galleries, as well as sell prints or books that include the work etc, unless I have relinquished my copyright (in the case of some commercial commissions). If any of these enterprises profit me, I must credit the commissioner by name in the book/gallery or somewhere comparable.
  • Use work to advertise myself.

These terms and conditions are subject to change (last updated 26.08.2020).
